| Activity Outcome | Visualizing, exploring and investigating construction of shape patterns using paper folding. (Congruence) | | MTS Set | MTS7 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | Location and Transformation | | Topics | Dissection Transformation | | Keywords | Transforming Shape, Pattern, Congruence, 2D Shape | | Grouping | Whole class, independent and learning pairs. | | Resources | Scissors and working paper. | | Lesson Notes | - Ask: Can you follow the steps to make a pattern of congruent triangles? Each time you fold the paper you cut one more triangle. Is there a pattern in the increasing number of triangles you make with each fold? Follow the steps to find out.
- Provide the opportunity for students to share responses.
- Direct students to the Investigation and ask: Can you find a way to cut a sheet of folded paper to make an arrow like the one pictured? Start by imagining how you will need to cut the paper and then draw a diagram. Swap your diagram with a partner so they try to make the arrow using your idea.
- Bring students together to share responses.
- (Reflection) Provide students with the opportunity to continue experimenting with folding and cutting shapes and patterns of shapes. Encourage students to share any interesting shapes and patterns they make..
