Activity OutcomeIdentifying arrangements used to create patterns inside shapes. (Length) Enlarging a shape.
MTS Set 5
NSW Curriculum SGS3 Position
Topics 2D Shape
Transformation
Keywords Transforming Shape, Scale, Pattern, Length, 2D Shape
GroupingIndependent and small group.
ResourcesCopy the activity on an overhead sheet, an overhead projector. A clear plastic ruler for measuring on the overhead would be useful.
Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the Investigation on the overhead and ask: What do you need to do? What key information do you need to find before you begin to draw a large copy of each pattern? Students record their response to the question before joining in with a small group to share ideas.
  • Bring groups together to share responses as a class. (Measures need to be taken to (1) Check that both shapes are squares and (2) locate the intersection of each line on the perimeter of the squares. If an intersection is halfway along a side of the small square it can also be located halfway along the side of a large square. That is, students should not just assume both shapes are squares and that the intersections along the sides are at the halfway point.)
  • Ask: After you have made your measures what will you do next? How would you start to draw this same line pattern in the empty square? Why do you think that? Do you agree/disagree? ... Continue working as a whole class until the line pattern is complete on the overhead.
  • Direct students to draw their own copy of both line patterns.
  • Share responses.
ReflectionsSee Lesson Notes. Ask: Can you make up a line pattern of your own inside a square? What tools do you need to draw a square? (Right angle and ruler.)
