Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the Investigation and ask: Do you already know of any combinations of shapes that will tessellate?
  • What shape combinations would be best to try first? Why do you think that? Which shapes will you try? Direct students to list some shape combinations on the back of the activity sheet.
  • Direct students to carry out the investigation.
  • Move around the class and ask: (Reflection) Have you found any combinations of shapes that can be used to create a tessellating pattern? Will this combination help you think of a way to create a new tessellating pattern using more than one shape? Why do you think that? Have you found any combinations of shapes that can't be used to create a tessellating pattern? Why did you reject these shapes? What shapes did you use to create this pattern? Can you tell me how you changed the position of the shapes each time to create the pattern?
  • Provide the opportunity for students to share their responses with the whole class on several occasions through the activity.
ReflectionsAsk: Do you share any shape combinations that can be used to create a tessellating pattern? Did you see any good ideas from others that helped you with your ideas? Can you tell me about these good ideas?
