Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the Investigation and ask: Can you tell me about some shapes you already know will tessellate? Will a triangle tessellate? Will a quadrilateral tessellate? Can you think of any other shapes that will tessellate?
  • Direct students to carry out the investigation.
  • Move around the class and ask: (Reflection) What shape did you use to create this pattern? Can you tell me how you changed the position of the shape each time to create the pattern? Can you think of a small change you could make to this shape so you could make a different tessellating pattern?
  • Provide the opportunity for students to share their responses with the whole class on several occasions through the activity.
ReflectionsAsk: Do you have tessellating patterns to share with others? Did you see any good ideas from others that helped you with your ideas? Can you tell me about these good ideas?
