- Direct students to the Investigation and ask: What do you need to find out? How could you test to see if adults use imperial measures more than metric measures? Can you think of examples of measures that adults might make using imperial units? (Heights, area of blocks of land, speeds, fuel consumption, baby weights...) Can you think of examples of measures that adults might make using metric units? (Lengths, capacity of bottles...).
- Direct students to work in pairs to devise several different tests.
- (Reflection) Bring pairs together on several occasions to share and question their developing ideas. Encourage students to listen to, and evaluate, good ideas they hear from others.
- Share all completed test items. Ask: (Reflection) Who can we test? How many tests should we make? How can we record the results of the tests?
- Direct pairs to carry out their tests as appropriate.
- Provide the opportunity for pairs to share responses. Ask: (Reflection) What does our data say about adult measurement habits?
