| Lesson Notes |
- Direct students to the Investigation and ask: What do you need to find out? What information do you have? How much air-space holds 1.2 kg of air? Can you estimate the mass of air that would be inside this classroom? Write down your estimate.
- Direct students to compare estimates in small groups. Ask: (Reflection) Can you agree on the same or very similar estimates?
- Bring groups together to share estimates and strategies for making estimates.
- Direct students to draw a diagram on the activity sheet to illustrate how they will solve the problem, including making measures of the height of the room. (Estimating by using the length of a known object such as door. Using a long object. Throwing a weighted string over any exposed beams...)
- Place students into small groups and ask: (Reflection) Do you all have a strategy that will solve this problem?
- Bring students together to share strategies.
- Direct students to carry out their strategies.
- Direct students to complete the Reflection checklist. Discuss responses as appropriate.
- Provide the opportunity for students to share responses in small groups. Ask: Do you have the same or very similar solutions? Can you account for any differences in your solutions?
- Share responses as a class.
