GroupingLearning pairs, whole class and independent.
ResourcesCopy the activity to an overhead sheet, an overhead projector. Thin white card cut into squares about 15 cm x 15 cm, scissors, ruler. Make up a shape pattern as described on the activity sheet to show the students.
Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the overhead sheet and the model pattern you have made. Ask: Work with your partner. Can you read the steps and use the diagrams to work out how to make a shape pattern like mine?
  • Provide pairs with time to carry out this task. Share responses where students use the diagrams on the overhead to explain the procedure.
  • Ask: (Reflection) Are you ready to follow the steps and diagrams to make the shape pattern?
  • Direct pairs to carry out the task. Share responses. Ask: (Reflection) Have you made the same shape pattern as mine?
  • Direct pairs to experiment making up new shape patterns using the same technique.
  • Provide the opportunity to share responses.
