Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the map on the overhead sheet and ask: Can you see how the grid reference points describe locations on the map? What information can we take from the map of Jones Island? Do we know which way is north on the island? Why do you think that? What information needs to be added to the map so we know which direction is north? How would you describe the land features? Where is it hilly? Why do you think that? Where is the land more likely to be level? Why do you think that? Where would you expect the coast to be rocky and dangerous? Why do you think that? Where is the coast more likely to be safe for boating? Why do you think that? Do we know how big the island is? Why do you think that?
  • What further information would need to be added to the map so we could get an idea of the size of the island? How big would you estimate the island to be? Why do you think that? ...
  • Direct students to carry out the task of locating the grid reference points for each feature.
  • Place students with a partner and ask: (Reflection) Can you agree on the location of each feature?
  • Provide the opportunity for pairs to share responses.
ReflectionsSee Lesson Notes. Say: Work with a partner to draw a map of a new island but this time add in the cardinal points of the compass and the scale that describes the distances on the map.
