ResourcesAs required by students. It may be useful to have modelling clay and containers available. This activity is designed for student to think through solutions based on understandings rather than concrete observations.
Lesson Notes
  • Provide each student with a copy of the activity sheet and emphasise that each student is to keep their own personal solutions.
  • Direct pairs to resolve each query as best they can. (Give plenty of time.) Can you agree on all solutions? Be sure to think through mathematical reasons for each solution you decide to record.
  • Place pairs into groups and ask: (Reflection) Can you agree on all solutions? Be sure to think through mathematical reasons for each solution you decide to record.
  • Place small groups into large groups of 8 and ask: (Reflection) Can you agree on all solutions? Be sure to think through mathematical reasons for each solution you decide to record.
  • Provide the opportunity for groups to share responses. Where possible test ideas with practical experience.
