| Activity Outcome | Recognising and extending patterns based on triangles. |
| MTS Set | 3 |
| NSW Curriculum | SGS2 Two-dimensional Shape |
| Topics | 2D Shape |
| Keywords | Draw, Transformation, Pattern, 2D Shape |
| Grouping | Independent and pairs. |
| Resources | Ruler, coloured pencils. Copy activity sheet A on an overhead sheet, an overhead projector. |
| Lesson Notes | - Direct students to activity sheet A and ask: What is the shape used to make each pattern on this page? Can you show me with your finger where you might draw the next triangle in the first pattern?
- Direct students to continue each pattern.
- Provide the opportunity for students to meet in pairs to check their patterns. Ask: (Reflection) Can you agree that you have both finished each pattern correctly?
- Direct students to activity sheet B and ask: Can you create the start of a triangle pattern on each grid? When each pattern is ready to be repeated stop drawing as a partner is going to finish it for you.
- Provide the opportunity for students to swap patterns with a partner.
- Students return completed patterns to their partner. Ask: Has your partner completed each pattern correctly? Why do you think that?
