| Activity Outcome | Measuring the capacity of a variety of common containers (millilitres). |
| MTS Set | MTS5 |
| NATIONAL Curriculum | Using Units of Measurement |
| Topics | Scale Direct Measure Understand Units Volume and Capacity |
| Keywords | Volume and Capacity, Tables |
| Grouping | Whole class and small group. |
| Resources | 6-10 cups and glasses that are different in shape, millilitre measuring container, water. |
| Lesson Notes | - Do this activity before Activity 300. Provide each group with a copy of the activity sheet.
- Direct groups to the Investigation and ask: What do you need to find out? Do all cups and glasses hold the same amount of water? How can we measure to find out? How is a measuring jug used in the kitchen?
- Direct groups to the 'Materials' list and ask: Why do we need more than one cup or glass to find the answer to the question? If we collect different data for a range of cups and glasses how will we decide how much a cup or glass holds? (Approximate. Round. Average.)
- Direct groups to the 'Strategy' and ask: Can you tell me how we will use this table to record the data we collect?
- Where would you show a measure of 215 mL for the first container? ... Is there anything else we need to plan before we begin measuring?
- Direct groups to measure and record capacities.
- Move around the groups and ask: (Reflection) What are you trying to find out? Why are you collecting data on a range of different cups and glasses? What information have you collected so far? Do you have enough information to answer the question? Why do you think that?
- Provide groups with the opportunity to share 'Findings'.
- Direct groups to the question posed at the bottom of the activity sheet and ask: Can you explain how to solve this problem?
- Direct students to find a suitable strategy.
- Provide the opportunity for groups to share responses.

| Reflections | See Lesson Notes.
Ask: How could you use your knowledge about the capacity of cups and glasses to work out how much water you drink in a day? Week? Year? ...
