  • It is suggested children investigate how clothes are sorted at home by helping with the washing during the week. This experience can be used to center discussions on sorting and washing clothes and the sequence of events between the dirty clothes basket and clean clothes back in a cupboard (See Integration Links below).
  • Ask: Have you seen how clothes are sorted before they go in the washing machine? How were the clothes sorted for washing? Can you tell me what you did to help sort the clothes for washing? Why don't we just put all the dirty clothes in the dirty washing machine at the same time? Why did you sort the white clothes from the coloured clothes? Which clothes are the very dirty clothes? Dirty clothes? Not very dirty clothes?
  • Provide children with the opportunity to work in a small group and share how the clothes were sorted and washed in their home.
  • Ask: Has everyone in your group had a turn to speak about washing clothes?
  • Direct children to the activity sheet and ask: I want you to show me how your washing is sorted into groups. What group might you draw in the first box? And in the second box?
  • Direct children to draw more boxes on the back of the activity sheet if required.
  • Move around the class and ask: Can you tell me how your washing is sorted? How many groups will you need to make? How is the washing in this group all the same? How is the washing in this group and this group, different?
ReflectionsAsk: See Integration Links.
Integration Links Health: Self-management Skills Ask: Why do clothes need washing? What happens to the clothes in the washing machine?
What is put into the washing machine besides clothes? What happens to clothes after they have been washed? How do your clothes get from the dirty clothes basket to your bedroom cupboards? (Children draw the sequence)
