Lesson Notes
  • Use this activity with the whole class and an overhead projector.
  • Direct children to the first picture (cover the others). Read the question to the children.
  • Ask: How can we tell how many children are missing? How can we use our 'counters' to help answer the question? (A child can bring 8 counters to the overhead and place 4 counters on the penguin children that can be seen. The remaining counters go to the side to represent the missing children (visualise).
  • Ask: Can you tell me a story about the penguin children? ("There are 8 children in the penguin family. We can see 4 of them ,but another 4 are missing.")
  • Provide the opportunity for several children to carry out this task and tell the 'story'.
  • Repeat for the other activities.
ReflectionsAsk: Place children into groups of 3 or 4 and ask: Can you make up an animal story like mine?
