| Lesson Notes | - Use this activity with the whole class and an overhead projector.
- Direct children to the first picture (cover the others). Read the question to the children.
- Draw a picture of a tree and ask: How can we tell how many koala children are behind the tree? How can we use our 'counters' to help answer the question? (A child can bring 6 counters to the overhead and place 3 counters on the koala children that can be seen. The remaining counters go 'behind' the tree.)
- Ask: Can you tell me a story about Mrs Koala and her children? ("Mrs Koala has 6 children. 3 of them are holding on to her and 3 are hiding behind a tree.")
- Provide the opportunity for several children to carry out this task and tell the 'story'.
- Repeat for the other activities.

| Reflections | Ask: Place children into groups of 3 or 4 and ask: Can you make up an animal story like mine?
