| Grouping | Learning pairs |
| Resources | A paper bag and 10 red and 10 blue counters for each pair. |
| Lesson Notes | - Provide children with the resources and activity sheet.
- Describe how to play the game - Ask: How many red counters are in the bag? How many blue counters are in the bag? How many counters in the bag altogether? Take turns to choose 4 counters from the bag without looking. (Demonstrate) I have 2 blue counters and 2 red counters. Write 2 and 2 in the boxes.
- Make up a number story about the actions: "I had 4 counters. 2 counters are blue and 2 counters are red." Ask: Can you say the number story to me?
- Direct children to play the game for a few minutes before stopping them to ask: How are you sharing in the game? Who is writing the numbers? Who is taking the counters from the bag? Can you tell me your first sum? ("I had 4 counters. 3 counters are blue and 1 counter is red.")
- Direct children to continue playing the games. Bring the children back together several times to 'read' their number stories.

| Reflections | Ask: Did you work well as a pair? Did you share the work to be done? How did you share the work?
Ask: Turn your activity sheet over. Can you remember any number stories you made when you took 10 counters from the bag? Are there any other number stories about 10??
