Lesson Notes
  • It is assumed that students have had experience with hands on filling of containers of various shapes and sizes prior to this activity.
  • Direct students to the diagrams in Task 1 and ask: These are pictures of containers holding sand. How many different containers are there? Are any of the containers the same shape? Which container is the tallest? Which container is the widest? Which container is the biggest? Which container is the smallest? Which 3 containers are the same height but different sizes?
  • Ask: Which container is nearly full with sand? Which container is nearly empty? Which container is about half full?
  • Which container is about one quarter full?
  • Direct students to Task 2 and ask: How can you guess about one quarter full for each container? (half and half again.)
  • Discuss student suggestions.
  • Direct students to carry out the task. (Reflection) Ask them to check their work with a partner.
  • Provide the opportunity for students to share responses giving explanations of why they think they have shown one quarter.
