ResourcesMeasuring resources such as balance scales, rulers, measuring jugs and general containers such as plastic cups..., clean sand for filling. Copy the activity on A3 paper for each group.
Lesson Notes
  • Direct students to the activity sheet and ask: What do you need to find out? What is meant by exactly half full? Can you think of a way you might solve this problem? Discuss ideas in your groups.
  • Bring groups together to share ideas. Ask: Do you think that idea would work? Why do you think that? Do you have a different idea that would also work? What materials would you need? What is the first step in your plan? What would you do next?...
  • Direct students to further discuss the strategy they would like to use and to draw pictures to show how they will solve the problem.
  • Provide the opportunity for students to share planning ideas.
  • Direct students to the reflection on the activity sheet and ask: (Reflection) Decide as a group: What do you think of your plan? Why do you think that about your group's plan? Can you improve your plan?
  • Provide groups with the opportunity to carry out their plan.
  • Provide groups with the opportunity to share responses.
