In your group you need to decide how you are going to solve the problem using an ice-cream container and a yogurt container or 2 ice-cream containers and balance scales. - Provide students with the opportunity to discuss the problem and their choice of materials.
- Direct students to decide on a set of steps (plan) they will carry out to solve the problem.
- Ask: What is the first step in your plan? What will you do next? How will that help solve the problem? Does everyone in the group know what to do? Can you draw pictures to show the steps you will use to solve the problem?
- Provide students with the opportunity to help each other draw their group plan.
- After students have completed their plan ask: (Reflections) Can you tell me about your plan? Do you all understand what to do? What will you do first? What is the most important part of your plan? Do you need to measure carefully? How will you know you have measured one half?...
- Direct students with the opportunity to carry out their plan.
- Provide students with the opportunity to share their solutions with the class.
