| Lesson Notes | - Work with children in a group of about 6. Provide each child with a copy of the activity sheet.
- Initiate the 'guessing' aspect of the activity by holding up 4 fingers and ask: How many fingers can you see? - and then quickly close your fingers.
- Repeat for other sets of fingers.
- Ask: About how many children are in the class today? Give children several seconds to look around the class before asking for responses.
- Count the children in the class so children can compare their 'guess' with the number.
- Direct children to the activity sheet and ask: How many smiley faces are in Box 1? Give children enough time to make a reasoned response but not enough time to count every face.
- Note: it is appropriate to allow the children sufficient time to count some of the faces and then make a guess.
- After each child has provided their guess, ask: How can we check our guess? Children count to find total - you may also ask them to place a tick on each face they count.
- Repeat for the faces in the other boxes. Children should begin to reason (and explain) that if Box 2 has 15 faces then the number for Box 3 must be greater, Box 6 is about the same as Box 5...

| Reflections | Ask: Can you think of a question that starts with 'Guess how many...?' (Guess how many desks are in the room? Guess how many shoes are in the room?...)
