GroupingIndependent and whole class
ResourcesAccess to Internet. You will need to establish contact with a colleague in another class or school to enable children to ask and answer questions.
Lesson Notes
  • Almost all questions children ask will have a mathematical basis (How tall are you? What colour is your hair? How big are your shoes?...) Children are using mathematics to compare, sort and classify their personal world.
  • Encourage children to think about several questions of their own and to write/draw their ideas in the first 2 boxes.
  • Share ideas from around the class and list a range of questions provided by children on the board. Practice reading the questions.
  • Ask children to use the third box to write one more question that they have heard from someone else. Discuss selections and ask: Why did you think that was a good question? What might the answer be?
  • Provide students with the opportunity to email (or use chat line) their questions to a child in another location. In return your children could answer similar questions that come from a colleagues class.
  • Complete the activity by discussing some of the similarities and differences the children discover about each other.
ReflectionsAsk: What is the most interesting piece of information you found out about your email partner? How are you like your email partner? How are you different? What was the most interesting question you were asked? Would you like to find out more about your email partner? What questions could you ask?...
