Lesson Notes
  • Activity 1. - Students independently write an interpretation for each of the phrases using 'million'.
  • Students meet in small groups to share ideas and agree on a group response.
  • Share responses from around the class.
  • Activity 2. - Students work in pairs to prepare answers for several of the questions.
  • Students share answers in whole group discussions. Students listening should be encouraged to ask questions seeking clarification of points made.
  • Activity 3. - Students independently develop a strategy and carry out working to test the conjecture.
  • Extend: Investigate responses from others to the question: What would you do with a million dollars? Students collect, record and report on the data.
  • Ask students to make up 'time' conjectures similar to Clarrie's conjecture.
ReflectionsAsk: Can you think of other 'million dollar' problems to investigate? (Could a house be worth a million dollars? Are there numbers bigger than a million?...)
