| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding large whole numbers in context. | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Large Numbers, Integers | | Grouping | Independent, pairs and groups | | Resources | Not applicable | | Lesson Notes | - Note: Regardless of whether students feel they 'know' the answer for each question they must enter an answer using a best guess or what they might imagine the answer to be.
- Activity 1. Is a 'snowballing' activity. A 'snowballing' activity is like 'think, pair, share' except that students must AGREE on a response to each activity in the time provided.
- Students work independently on activity 1 a-e.
- Students work in pairs to compare answers. They must AGREE on answers in the time given.
- The pairs then meet with another pair (group of 4) to share, and then AGREE on an answer for each situation.
- Groups then report to the whole class to share, and justify mathematically, their responses (e.g. "I was in a plane last holidays and the pilot said we were flying at 32 000 feet." - the student justifies his/her response mathematically and with recent experience.)
- After each group provides a response to the class listeners can be invited to ask questions of the group.
- In activity 2 students work in small groups to determine an AGREED 'good' number for each sentence.
- After each group provides a response to the class listeners can be invited to ask questions/debate reasonableness of solutions provided by the group.
