| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding place value in whole numbers to 1 000 000's. | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Large Numbers, Integers | | Grouping | Independent, pairs and groups | | Resources | Not applicable | | Lesson Notes | - Students work independently on activity 1 a-e.
- Students work in pairs to compare answers for a-d and then swap and solve puzzles in e.
- Activity 2 can be taken as a 'snowballing' or 'think, pair, share' activity. That is, students independently record an answer in each sentence. They then meet in pairs to share, and then AGREE, on an answer in each sentence. The pairs then meet with another pair to share, and AGREE, on an answer in each sentence.
- Groups then report to the whole class to share, and justify mathematically, their responses ("WA can't have 200 000 people because I have heard that Perth has a million people...").
