Lesson Notes
  • Carry out a brainstorm where children offer ideas about what should be measured to say 'how big' (height, width, thickness, area, mass may all be suggested). Ask questions that help children to elaborate on their ideas: How will you use the pop-sticks to measure how tall you are? - I will lie down first and get Jerry to make a mark for my head and foot..." Children carry out their measurements. Ask: "Are you measuring your height? How many straws do you think you will need?
  • What other body parts can you measure with straws? Will this pile of blocks be enough to measure how tall you are? Why did you choose the straws rather than the small blocks?...
  • After making their measures ask children to show how big they are in pictures, numbers and words.
  • Ask students to display their picture and tell others 'how big' they are.
ReflectionsAsk: Do you have enough information to tell others 'how big' you are? Why might we need to know 'how big' we are? (clothing, growth, compare with others, interest)
Integration Links Health: How do we change as we grow older? What should we do to make sure we grow properly? (diet, exercise, sleep)

Internet Links http://www.smileyforbabies.com/ Excellent site giving young children the opportunity to interact with computers and the Internet (e.g. an onscreen piano keyboard where children can 'invent' their own tunes)
