  • Tell students they need to work out how to solve the problem and share their idea with you before they get the candles.
  • Students carry out the investigation. Questions that can be asked as they work include: How long do you think you were as a baby? Are most babies about the same length? How careful do you need to be when measuring? Have you all been measured in your group? Who has grown the least? most? ...
  • Share findings from around the class: Are most of your answers about the same? Why are some answers a little different?
  • How many candles will you grow by the timeyou are 10? 20?

ReflectionsAsk students to draw pictures to show the things they did to answer the question. Encourage them to think about the things they did in steps, and to draw a different picture for each step.
