Lesson Notes
  • Discuss relationships between whole numbers and powers of numbers (indices).
  • Students make up other numbers represented as powers.
  • Students work independently answering the questions.
  • Discuss answers including strategies for solving problem 8 (e.g. use the calculator to find how many thousands of millions - 5 911 + 5 911 = 11 882 - and then add zeros for millions mentally: 11 882 000 000).
  • Form students into groups to prepare strategies for solving the Investigation.
  • Students share strategies (in particular, ideas about scaling) and revise their plans as necessary before working on the sports area.
  • Students carry out the working for their scale solar system.
  • Students compare models and evaluate their success in solving the problem.
ReflectionsStudents compare models and evaluate their success in solving the problem.
