Lesson Notes
  • Use the table to stimulate discussion between the students about what the data means. Ask: What does this data tell us?
  • How have the numbers in classes changed over time? How many children were in class when your grandparents went to school? Are the numbers in classes getting smaller or larger as time goes by? How much time has gone by since there were 40 children in a class? Could some classes today have more than 30 children? Less than 30 children? Why do we say: Classes today have about 30 children?...
  • Students write a couple of sentences to answer the Find Out question. Look to see if students are beginning to use numerical data from the table to support their ideas.
  • Share ideas/sentences around the class.
  • Use the 'Talk About' focus question to focus attention on the reasons for change over time (S&E - Time, Continuity and Change).
  • Students follow the discussion by writing about some of the reasons numbers have changed. Look to see if students are beginning to use numerical data from the table to support their ideas.
ReflectionsStudents do the Reflection on the activity sheet. Ask students to provide an example of a good idea they heard/gave.
