Lesson Notes
  • Encourage students to independently register a conjecture (greater or less than 1 m) before any discussion takes place.
  • Share conjectures and reasoning around the class ("We think the stack of cubes will be higher than one metre because...").
  • Give students the opportunity to reassess their conjecture in the light of discussions. (Reflective inquiry)
  • Students work in learning pairs to create and describe a strategy in list and/or diagram form.
  • Learning pairs share strategies and findings. Listeners question as appropriate.
  • Students, as a class group, choose the more appropriate and efficient strategies used to solve the problem.
  • Extend: Students work in their learning plans to describe how they might solve the problem on the activity sheet: 'How could you calculate the mass of 100 000 small cubes' .
  • Students draw diagrams of different rectangular prisms that could be constructed from 100 000 small cubes (10 x 100 x 100; 100 x 20 x 50...). (S3.2)
ReflectionsLearning pairs evaluate each other's plans using the scale: Excellent plan, Good plan, Needs more work, Change to a new plan
