| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding whole numbers to 100 000. Volume | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Strategies, Volume and Capacity, Large Numbers, Integers | | Grouping | Learning pairs | | Resources | An MAB small cube and flat, sheet of newspaper, calculator per pair. | | Lesson Notes | - Encourage students to independently register a conjecture (greater or less than 1 m) before any discussion takes place.
- Share conjectures and reasoning around the class ("We think the stack of cubes will be higher than one metre because...").
- Give students the opportunity to reassess their conjecture in the light of discussions. (Reflective inquiry)
- Students work in learning pairs to create and describe a strategy in list and/or diagram form.
- Learning pairs share strategies and findings. Listeners question as appropriate.
- Students, as a class group, choose the more appropriate and efficient strategies used to solve the problem.
- Extend: Students work in their learning plans to describe how they might solve the problem on the activity sheet: 'How could you calculate the mass of 100 000 small cubes' .
- Students draw diagrams of different rectangular prisms that could be constructed from 100 000 small cubes (10 x 100 x 100; 100 x 20 x 50...). (S3.2)
