| Activity Outcome | Estimating, reading, writing, saying and understanding large whole numbers. Time |
| MTS Set | MTS7 |
| NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System |
| Topics | Understand Whole Numbers |
| Keywords | Strategies, Large Numbers, Integers |
| Grouping | Learning pairs |
| Resources | Stopwatch or watch with second hand per learning pair. |
| Lesson Notes | - Allow learning pairs to work through all tasks without interruption.
- After all students have had time to complete the tasks place them in groups to share strategies and solutions.
- After the group activity provide time for learning pairs to reflect on and, where appropriate, change their strategy/solution.
- Conduct whole class discussion of solutions and processes.
- Ask students to write several similar investigations based on heart rates such as: How many heart beats have I had in my lifetime? Will my heart beat more than one million times in my lifetime? How much faster does my heart beat when I run? ...
- Extend: Students carry out investigations based on any of their questions raised about heart rates.
- Students experiment with other muscle activities such as lifting a small weight to see how long it takes for the muscle to tire as compared to the work done by the heart (a muscle that works non-stop for a lifetime).
- See Internet Links below.
|
| Reflections | Ask: How do your results compare to others? Students swap work to check and verify results.

| Answers | Answers will vary but could be expected to be as follows: one hour = 1 700 heart beats, one day = 40 000 heart beats,
one year = 15 000 000 heart beats, one century = 1 500 000 000 heart beats |
