Lesson Notes
  • Allow learning pairs to work through all tasks without interruption.
  • After all students have had time to complete the tasks place them in groups to share strategies and solutions.
  • After the group activity provide time for learning pairs to reflect on and, where appropriate, change their strategy/solution.
  • Conduct whole class discussion of solutions and processes.
  • Ask students to write several similar investigations based on heart rates such as: How many heart beats have I had in my lifetime? Will my heart beat more than one million times in my lifetime? How much faster does my heart beat when I run? ...
  • Extend: Students carry out investigations based on any of their questions raised about heart rates.
  • Students experiment with other muscle activities such as lifting a small weight to see how long it takes for the muscle to tire as compared to the work done by the heart (a muscle that works non-stop for a lifetime).
  • See Internet Links below.
ReflectionsAsk: How do your results compare to others? Students swap work to check and verify results.

AnswersAnswers will vary but could be expected to be as follows: one hour = 1 700 heart beats, one day = 40 000 heart beats, one year = 15 000 000 heart beats, one century = 1 500 000 000 heart beats
