| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding whole numbers to 100 000's. Area | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Strategies, Large Numbers, Integers, Area | | Grouping | Independent | | Resources | Have measuring materials available for students to select as required. A calculator should also be available for each student. | | Lesson Notes | - Encourage students to independently register a conjecture (greater or less than 100 000) before any discussion takes place.
- Share ideas around the class, i.e. students use large numbers in context and give mathematical reasoning to support their conjecture ("I think more than 100 000 one centimetre cubes because...").
- Give students the opportunity to reassess their conjecture.
- Students independently create and describe their strategy without viewing a carpark bay or measuring materials, i.e.
- they visualise their plan.
- Students negotiate with the teacher in regard to their strategy and the materials they will need before carrying out their working.
- After students have described a viable plan allow them to carry out their working. Note: Their plan need not result in an exact answer. (Students should plan according to an inquiry process such as Investigation, Materials, Strategy, Working, Finding)
- Students share plans and results. Listeners question plans and results as appropriate.
- Students, as a group, choose the most appropriate and efficient strategy to solve the problem.
- Extend: Students create an area that is needed to show one million MAB small cubes. Discuss different shapes that could be created to show the million cubes.
| | Reflections | Use the Reflection Table provided on the activity sheet. Students use mathematical explanations to justify their personal rating.
