Lesson Notes
  • Discuss strategies that could be used to solve the problem. Ask: What do we understand by the term 'approximate number of words'? Why don't we have to count every word in a book? What should we do if the books we like to read vary a lot in size?...
  • Encourage students to make a quick approximation of the size (number of words) of books they like to read and to 'tick' the Reflection Table provided.
  • Instruct students to visualise and then describe their strategy in steps and show it to you before they do any working on calculations. Make sure they have thought the process through before they move on.
  • Compare student findings (using large numbers in context). Students must be able to justify their opinion in response to the question: How reasonable is your approximation? ("I think my approximation is reasonable because I used 5 books rather than just 1 book and ...")
ReflectionsAsk: How reasonable is your approximation?
