| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding large whole numbers to 10 000's. (Area) | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Strategies, Large Numbers, Integers, Area | | Grouping | Learning pairs | | Resources | For each learning pair: 1 MAB small cube, 1 MAB flat, metre measuring tape or ruler. | | Lesson Notes | - Encourage students to independently register a conjecture (greater or less than 10 000) before any discussion takes place.
- Share ideas around the class, i.e. students use large numbers in context and give mathematical reasoning to support their conjecture. ("I think less than 10 000 because...")
- Give students the opportunity to reassess their conjecture based on the class discussion.
- Direct learning pairs to share ideas about a 'best plan'.
- After students have had time to discuss various options for solving the problem, being them together as a class and ask: What plans have you thought about? Which planning option seems the best option? How is it the best option? Can it be improved in any way? Can anyone see how they can improve their plan?...
- Use Reflective Inquiry (whole class-group sharing) throughout the planning and working stages. Encourage students to evaluate and adjust their progress as they listen to, and are questioned by, others.
- Share results as a class and encourage students to determine the most efficient strategy to solve the question (i.e. a strategy need not result in an exact answer to resolve the investigation question).
| | Reflections | Use the Reflection Table. Students use mathematical explanations to justify their personal rating.
