Lesson Notes
  • Students find the number of letters in their name.
  • Discuss strategies for finding out how many children in the class have the same number of letters in their name: Line up in groups, record with counters, make a list....
  • Students vote on the best strategy.
  • Carry out the strategy. Ask: How many children have 5 letters in their name? Do most names have more or less than 5 letters?
  • Ask: What is the most common number of letters in a name? Students record their finding on the activity sheet.
  • Instruct students to draw a picture on their activity sheet to show how they answered this question
ReflectionsAsk: Can you think of other questions we could ask about letters in names? (Who has the longest name? shortest? How many people have a first name longer/shorter than their family name?...)
