| Activity Outcome | Reading, writing, saying and understanding large whole numbers. Measuring Volume. Congruence in 3D shapes |
| MTS Set | MTS7 |
| NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System |
| Topics | Understand Whole Numbers |
| Keywords | Strategies, Large Numbers, Integers |
| Grouping | Learning pairs |
| Resources | Have available: 1 cm cubes, metre tapes or rulers |
| Lesson Notes | - Students will need to approximate body shape to a prism to calculate volume. Discuss how this might be achieved through congruence and shape (i.e. "Lay on your back, hands by your sides and feet together. What common regular shape does your body make?" - rectangular prism).
- Direct students to refer to the problem solving process provided on the activity sheet - ticking off the steps as they go.
- After findings have been made come together as a class to share responses and strategies. Encourage students to question each reporting group about their findings and process.
- Ask students to reflect on their findings and decide if the inquiry should be re-done. Give the time and space to do this as required.
- Extend: Find the volume of a trailer load of soil. (Soil, garden mulch etc is sold by the cubic metre - WM3).
- Find the amount of garden soil needed to top dress an area of lawn, or mulch required for a garden bed...

| Reflections | Refer to the problem solving process with groups describing their action at each step.
