| Activity Outcome | Using small numbers in context familiar to young students. Collecting and using numerical data to describe families. |
| MTS Set | 1 |
| NSW Curriculum | NS1 Whole Numbers |
| Topics | Understand Whole Numbers |
| Keywords | Represents Numbers, Personal Context, Number Sense, Count |
| Grouping | Groups of 4 |
| Resources | Return personal copies of Activity 003. Provide Activity 004A to each student. |
| Lesson Notes | - Instruct students to find a way to share the information in their group to fill in each table. (Perhaps do the first table as a model with the whole class.)
- Note: The Tables are completed using the data about each family in the group - including the child's own family.
- Provide a copy of Activity 004B to each student. Discuss information collected by each group using questions 1-4 on Activity 004B. Students talk about and write responses to each question using their data from Activity 004A.
- Question 5 needs to be answered separately with students discussing possible ways to find an answer. For example students may suggest lining up in groups of 1, 2, 3, 4... children in each family. Try different strategies suggested by students before deciding as a group on a 'best' strategy.
|
| Reflections | Ask: What is the 'best' strategy for finding how many children are in most families?
|
| Integration Links | See Activity 001. S&E: Students investigate and collect numerical data, and use the collected data, to talk about similarities and differences in family structures. See also Internet Links below. |
| Internet Links | Students use their questionnaire from Activity 003 to collect and record data about families at different locations. |
