Problem solving (Making an organised list). | | MTS Set | MTS4 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Counting, Large Numbers | | Grouping | Whole class and learning pairs | | Resources | Calculator each | | Lesson Notes | - Each Task on the activity sheet provides 2 strategies or plans for solving the same problem. Plan 1 shows data being organized into a list to solve the problem; Plan 2 shows a number sentence that can be used to solve the problem.
- Task 1. Ask students to describe in their own words how the 2 plans could be used to solve the problem.
- Direct students to use both plans for solving the problem.
- Ask further questions such as: How many matches in a carton that holds 10 boxes? 15 boxes? 20 boxes?... Students solve mentally, with calculator or by continuing patterns (counting in hundreds).
- Ask students to make a list using words and numbers rather than pictures and numbers to solve the problem (2 boxes = 100, 4 boxes = 200...).
- Task 2. Students complete in learning pairs.
- Discuss solutions.
- Ask students to make a list using words and numbers to solve the problem. (2 spoons = 100 peas, 4 spoons = 200 peas...)
- Ask: Can you think of other problems where we could use these plans - making a list and multiplying? (number of lollies in packets in a carton, number of apples in bags in a fruit box...)
- Students write several similar problems for others to solve.
