| Activity Outcome | Estimating, reading, writing and understanding large whole numbers. Tables Mass | | MTS Set | MTS6 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Large Numbers, Mass, Integers | | Grouping | Whole group and small group | | Resources | For each learning pair: Set of gram weights and balance scales, box of pasta shapes. | | Lesson Notes | - Encourage students to independently write their estimate (about the number of pasta shapes) in the space provided before any discussion takes place.
- This activity provides the opportunity to model the inquiry process (Investigating, Strategy Planning, Working, Finding) with students.
- Read through and discuss the strategy described on the activity sheet.
- Ask students to explain the strategy in their own words, including an explanation of how one small piece of data (the number of pasta shapes in 50 g) can be used to answer a more complex question (the number of pasta shapes in 1 kg).
- Students carry out their measuring and data calculations (repeated addition) using the table.
- Discuss other potential strategies for solving the problem (multiplication).
- Students use their preferred strategy (repeated addition or multiplication) to find the number of pasta shapes in 10 kg, 50 kg or any given mass.
- Ask students to pose similar questions for different materials.
| | Reflections | Ask: What strategy would you use to solve the question: How many rice grains are in 1 kg?...
Students work Activity 003 in small groups as a follow-up.
