| NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System |
| Topics | Understand Whole Numbers |
| Keywords | Counting, Large Numbers |
| Grouping | Learning pairs |
| Resources | One MAB flat and a sheet of A3 paper per learning pair |
| Lesson Notes | - Show students the paper and MAB flat but don't hand them out until they have had the opportunity to visualise, talk about and then sketch their plan for solving the inquiry.
- As the learning pairs talk about and draw their plans, bring them together several times to share their developing ideas (Reflective Inquiry strategy). Students should be encouraged to listen and learn from each other and to change and improve plans as necessary.
- Provide students with the materials to carry out their plans and solve the problem.
- Share findings.
- Extend the students' thinking - Ask: Can you make a sheet of paper that you could cover with 1 000 small cubes?
- Extend: Investigate layers of cubes on an A3 sheet of paper. Use a calculator and repeated addition to count layers.
- Extend: - Ask: How much space would we need if we made a single layer of 1000 MAB flats?
