- Instruct students to use pictures and/or words to show how they would solve the problem.
- After all students have completed a plan share ideas and seat students in common groups according to their planning.
- Reflection - Ask: Are all our plans good plans? Is any plan better than the other plans?
- Vote on a plan that can be used to solve the problem. If the opportunity is available ask this group to find the number of students in year 2.
- After finding the number of students discuss variations in numbers of year 2 students that could exist between schools (relative magnitude). Ask: About how many children would be in year 2 in a large school? In a medium size school? In a small school?
