Lesson Notes
  • Place each child with a peer tutor partner.
  • Peer tutors read the sentences to the students one at a time and assist them in providing a reasonable response in each situation (if answers are not known they can make up a 'reasonable' alternative such as an 8 digit telephone number).
  • As the activity can take some time it is a good idea to bring the whole class together on several occasions to share ideas and extend ideas. Ask questions such as: Who has a birthday in May? Who has a birthday very soon? Who has to wait a long time for their next birthday? Who has already had a birthday this year? Who has to wait till next year for their next birthday? Why do we give our homes a number? Why are telephone numbers such big numbers? How do you remember your telephone number?...
  • See also Integration Links and Internet Links Below.
ReflectionsDid your buddy help you learn? Why did you like working with your buddy? Did your buddy learn something about you? Can you tell me some of the things you and your buddy have written down?
Integration Links Mathematics: Activities 002-012 are focused on the child's personal world. It is appropriate then to use these activities as a general theme for mathematics over several weeks. Other investigations could include: How long is your hair? Can you make a model or models that show how tall, wide and round you are?
How many children have the same eye colour as you? How many different eye colours are there? Do the members of families all have the same eye colour?
Health: Concepts of a Healthy Lifestyle (bedtime, playtime, meal-time..)
S&E: Time, Continuity and Change: Things we do are affected by the time of day.

Internet Links Children (with assistance from buddies) could exchange personal information (on secure lines) collected during this activity with email pen-pals at their school or another school.
Ask children to find out about their pen-pal by asking questions: What questions can you ask to find out if your pen-pal looks like you? What questions can you ask to find out if your pen-pal likes to do the same things as you?
