| Activity Outcome | Estimating, reading, writing, saying and understanding large whole numbers. Measuring Area. | | MTS Set | MTS7 | | NATIONAL Curriculum | The Number System | | Topics | Understand Whole Numbers | | Keywords | Strategies, Large Numbers, Integers | | Grouping | Learning pairs | | Resources | Have available: 1 cm cube per pair, metre measuring tapes or rulers, calculators. | | Lesson Notes | - Direct students to independently register a guess before any discussion takes place. Tell them they will have the opportunity to reassess their guess after sharing of responses.
- Share guesses around the class (students use large numbers in context).
- Give students the opportunity to reassess their guess.
- Set learning pairs to work to discuss, and then sketch, a strategy for solving the problem.
- Provide the opportunity for groups to share strategies and be questioned by others. Encourage students to evaluate and adjust their progress as necessary.
- Direct students to use the 'headers' such as Our Working and Our Finding as they carry out their strategy, i.e. Our Investigation, Our Strategy, Our Working, Our Finding.
- Share results as a class and encourage students to determine the most accurate answer and most efficient strategy.
- Ask students to use the Reflective Table to evaluate and justify the accuracy of their guess (WM5).
- Students do Activity 002 as a follow-up to Activity 001.
| | Reflections | Use the evaluation table provided on the activity sheet: My guess/estimate was... Students use mathematical explanations to justify their personal rating, e.g. "I estimated the room was 1200 cm long and 1200 cm wide. So that meant the answer would be bigger than a million." | | Internet Links | | | Answers | Answers will vary |
