MTSonline Investigation Sheets

Inquiry-based Learning

  • The inquiry process is the vehicle for much of student learning. ("I wonder if...?)
  • To maximise learning and learning for life (as a "habit") teachers need to: (1) Plan for problem solving in many lessons; (2) Use frameworks for problem solving (available throughout MTSonline and via the attachments below); (3) Provide time to learn and reflect; (4) Provide suitable learning resources; (5) Encourage risk taking; (6) Encourage teamwork and communication.

Student's Role

To lead students into thinking and working mathematically it is recommended the following approach be used on a consistent basis across a school.
  • Students reword or re-present the stimulus investigation using their language.
  • Students brainstorm for ideas and strategies.
  • Students select, organise and make sense of strategies and the approach to be used (work in steps).
  • Students systematically carry out their working.
  • Students draw conclusions and compare and share findings.
  • Students reflect on their learning and ask questions about further investigations that may be necessary (What would happen if...? Can we change...? Will the same thing...? etc).

Inquiry Frameworks

  • A number of proforma inquiry frameworks are provided in the attachments below.
  • They can be printed for student use of displayed on an electronic whiteboard.
  • Please note that these same frameworks plus other variations are embedded in a great many MTSonline activities.
